Being a travel day, we awoke to beautiful blue skies, although it was cold, all of 10C! Of course, by the time we stopped for lunch it was back to the usual 20-25C. It took us about 5 hours, including a stop for coffee in Orewa, north of Auckland, and lunch at a roadside picnic spot at Uretiti Beach. The last few days we've had the house owners chicken come and visit us over breakfast every morning. Today at lunch we had a rooster looking for handouts. Not sure who he belonged to as there wasn't much around. It was a nice view looking out to Bream Head.
We stopped in Kawakawa, partly to pick up a few groceries, but mainly to see the public toilets. These are listed in all of the guide books, and were worth the 5 minute detour. The insides are also done in very colourful tile and glass. We also found a nice local butcher who helped us out with some supplies.
On to Paihia, and found our rental, which has as good a view as we were promised! We can even see the Waitangi Treaty grounds and flagpole from our balcony. While a busyish seaside beach town, we think most of the people about were from the two cruise ships at anchor in the bay.
Tomorrow we've booked an all day sea kayaking tour that starts from the peninsula, the other side of Russell. Hopefully we'll get to see some dolphins, and if we're really lucky, some orca.
